My favourite place on earth

I have not been outside Canada much but I already know my favourite place on earth. It is Mount Assiniboine. Located in the southeastern corner of British Columbia, bordering on Banff National Park, Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park, is truly a special place. I have been there many times. On every visit, it recharges my soul and makes me happy to be alive. There is just something very special about it. I have more photographs of this mountain than any other. There is no place I would rather be with my camera. I keep returning, hoping to capture images even better than what I already have. The weather and conditions are always different. Every sunrise and every sunset is a new opportunity. I am very lucky to be able to live and work in the Canadian Rocky Mountains and to be able to regularly visit this spectacular area. This image was taken on my last visit, in September of 2011.

Welcome to my new website. Sorry, it's not finished. It's just started really. I've still got a lot of work to do but I wanted to get it up and running. Over the next few weeks and months, I will be adding to it and making changes. I'll be placing examples of recent work here on this Blog page and talking about a variety of things such as locations, advice, equipment and techniques. This will be my "fun" page where I will share my recent experiences and I welcome your comments and feedback through the Contact Form. Enjoy and welcome!

Small stream near Lake O'Hara, Yoho National Park. (image # B-2011-11-14)

The above image was taken using one of my favourite techniques. This image required great depth of field to get everything in sharp focus and it allowed me to use a very slow shutter speed. The slow shutter speed allowed the water to flow during the exposure, creating the soft silky effect in the water. Of course, a sturdy tripod is necessary to keep everything else sharp during the long exposure. A polarizing filter helps to saturate the colours and add to the exposure time. Although this image was taken with a digital slr camera, it reminds me of the good old days when I used my favourite film - Fuji Velvia. Velvia was awesome for capturing rich green colours. Although my film days are mostly behind me now, whenever I come across a scene similar to this, I'll be reminded of how much I enjoyed shooting with Velvia transparency film for the results it gave with some subjects.
